UNIT PLAN

GRADE 1 ELA

This 8-lesson unit plan was designed so that parents/guardians are able to understand each lesson and successfully implement it with their student. Although this plan was specifically designed to meet Nova Scotia Grade 1 curriculum outcomes, the lessons and activities can be easily adapted to meet a variety of ages and/or needs.

The full unit plan available for download by clicking here or you can review and download each lesson separately below.

LESSON 1

The purpose of this activity is to introduce students to journal writing. Journal writing is a great tool for students to practice their writing while providing an opportunity for reflection and to put their thoughts into writing.  Journal writing can be directed (based on a provided prompt or question) or indirect (reflection or free write).

LESSON 2

This lesson will allow for students to continue working on journal writing and further develop their writing skills. Since journaling will be an ongoing activity throughout this unit, it is important that students have a solid understanding and are able to confidently and independently participate.  Journal writing can be used not only for school but also as a way to personally regulate emotions. It's a great way to express thoughts and feelings in a productive way.

LESSON 3

The purpose of this lesson is to introduce postcards as a means to develop writing skills and also as a way to keep communication with others. With physical distancing going on, it is normal to feel a loss of connection with people you are used to seeing like friends, family, classmates, etc. Postcards are a great way to help maintain those relationships and give both parties something to do and look forward to receiving!

LESSON 4

The purpose of this lesson is to put in practice the student’s understanding of postcards from the previous lesson and to have them create their own postcard to be mailed out. This is a fun activity which is mutually beneficial for both those who create it and those who receive one. Especially during these strange times, it is more important than ever to continue communication and show appreciation to those around you.

LESSON 5

This lesson is a continuation of the previous lesson as it allows for students to continue developing their postcards into final drafts and then have an opportunity to deliver them. This allows for the full circle moment through these hands-on approaches since they are going from first learning about postcards to now finalizing and delivering one.

LESSON 6

Being healthy means more than just physically, but mentally as well. A lot of things are out of our control during these current stressful times so it is important that we continue to take care of ourselves and what we can control. This includes things like what food we put into our bodies and how we move them!

LESSON 7

This lesson will involve introducing two concepts: List writing (Non-fiction ELA) and Needs/Wants (Social Studies). It may seem intimidating to introduce these new concepts at the same time, but it is very doable through this practical approach.  These strange times allow for us to really reflect on our lives by thinking about our routines and activities and determining what is important to us. List writing may seem like a simple task, but it is an extremely beneficial tool for students to have as it is often used daily in everyday life.

LESSON 8

This lesson will bring together topics covered in lesson 6 and 7. Students will be responsible for writing their families grocery list for their weekly trip to the store. This involves students using skills of writing lists, making healthy choices and selecting items which are necessary for the family, not just what they want. This task allows the student to practically demonstrate their understanding from the unit and apply it as a life skill while helping out at home, since they are unable to physically go to the store.
